This page contains materials that answer a question I am frequently asked: What is Health/Medical/Biomedical Informatics? In addition to providing many links to key sites around the Web for biomedical and health informatics, this page also provides a voice-over-Powerpoint lecture (requiring the Flash plug-in) that addresses the question from my perspective. The slides of the lecture are also provided in PDF handout format and the audio portion in MP3 files that can played on an iPod or other portable audio device. I also provide some links to a couple papers I have written. (NOTE: This lecture was produced in September, 2011 and will be replaced by an updated lecture in early 2013.)

The lecture, which lasts about two hours and is divided into seven segments, and includes the following topics:
All of the references and Web site links from the slides are in an additional PDF file.

Here are the links to the Flash lectures, PDF files, and MP3 files:
Segment 1/7 (16:54) - Flash lecture   PDF of slides   MP3 of lecture audio
Segment 2/7 (19:43) - Flash lecture   PDF of slides   MP3 of lecture audio
Segment 3/7 (19:29) - Flash lecture   PDF of slides   MP3 of lecture audio
Segment 4/7 (30:33) - Flash lecture   PDF of slides   MP3 of lecture audio

There are a number of books written about the field as a whole and various aspects of it. Many of these are part of the Health Informatics series of Springer-Verlag. Some major books include:
There are also a number of publications I have written that address aspects of the field:
There are a number of organizations concerned with medical informatics :
